Holy Taro Pieces!

Okay, we've seen taro @Mcky D's and those are some good pieces, but check this one out! It's as big as my thumb and the rest of it broke off when I tried to pull it out of the leaves. Now that's TARO! Gotta love this guy who makes this stuff.

Salmon and Taro

Another view!

My Salon and Taro LauLau

Check this out! This is from the guy who sells taro dip and taro poke @ the open market on Saturday's. This thing was huge, full of leaves, taro, salmon and taro. Not much taste, but very light and moist. I think the way he cooked it drained all the salt from the salmon. None the less, it was goooood! The price wasn't too bad. $7.00 each laulau. Look @the pick, the plate is large plate that we use for a normal dinner. It took up the whole plate. Check out the other pics I took.

Ma'o Organic Farms

It looked like Ma'o was the only stand that carried organic produce. With that said it was very limited to beets, kale and a few other stuff that i had no idea about. None the less its ORGANIC and LOCAL.
Here's Ma'o Organics. "No Panic.... Go Organic"
This is when we just got in, CRAZY! There's tourists galore and a few locals too! LOL. This really puts everything into perspective. I think this is where everyone hangs. Nobody's @the mall anymore. You got GREAT food, and lots of different things like breads, veggies from local farms, fruits, plants, and whatever you can find. Proper etiquette here is bring your own bags, no pets and look around cause there is lines that form. Don't piss anyone off, cause some of them look pretty nuts walking around with a mission.

Open Market 4/18/09

Here we are Saturday, April 18 @the Open Market @KCC. By this picture it looks not so crowded. Keep in mind its 7:30 am and the lot is full! People coming and a lot of people leaving already! Weird. People of all ages, old and young, big and small. Here some other pictures that will really show you what's in there.

Free Range Correction

Well according to Yaya and Niteline, Free range doesn't mean that the animals are running around like Bambi in the Disney movies, but still confined in a cubby and not in an assembly line. I guess that's another thing that we all need to be aware of when we're eating and buying these types of products and foods. Quality Control! SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL GROWERS! Have a great Day. Later!
Lets talk about where we can find good food; raw, vegetarian, vegan, and organic. Whole Foods, a great place with a great food buffet, but you gotta go on the right days or your stuck with a lot of stews and pasty stuff. Salad bar is pretty good but pricey! We'll talk later on that. Whole Food's selection is okay if your looking Organic Stuff. Free range meats and poultry, fresh fish and a huge deli area where you can get what ever you want. Free range is where the animal can roam freely, and not couped up in a tight ass, shitty, stink and unsanitary area. For example when you buy eggs, some brands say organic, vegetarian, free range eggs. That means that the chickens are fed vegetarian diets and no steroids or other crap injected or given to them. FYI eating eggs is not a part of a vegan lifestyle, maybe vegetarian. BUT for the Rawfoodist a raw egg is the best! I'm still trying to find recipes for the raw egg besides eating it by itself and making homemade mayo. Stay tuned. An egg that is raw, fertilized, organic and free range will provide you the most nutrients that you'll ever have. Salmonella you ask? Well only 1 in 30,000 eggs will contain the salmonella(2002 U.S Dept of Agriculture officially acknowledged this statement). By the way I found this bit of info in Carol Alt's "RAW 50". A great book to start your Raw journey. These figures are for egg producers that don't care about being organic, and free range. You can probably see how much better those eggs are from healthier companies. Organic eggs might be a little more expensive but well worth the taste and freshness. Sam's Club sells those organic eggs for cheap, almost half the price of your local markets. Nothing beats having your own chicken. Quality control is all you! Personally if I had a chicken I could not eat a egg from her. Its just me. Overall Whole Foods is a pretty cool place for hot meals, some fresh produce, and good ass fish, but your gonna pay the price. Eh! If anyone who reads this from Whole Foods, please start up a Kama'aina card or something, times are hard! If your looking for answers about rawfoods or where to get started with it, that is not the place. They couldn't even tell me if they had germinating/sprouting bowls. Guess what! Its a regular jar or bowl that's it. So really ask questions with different people and you might find your answer or just hang on my blog and learn with me and even teach me a thing or two. We're all in it together.
Next is Umeke Market in Kahala, right next to Petland. I haven't been there since researching raw, but I know that they have a great selection on bulk oats @a great deal. especially quinoa(keen-wa) this is some good stuff. They have a deli that serves free range meat burgers and vegetarian dishes. I'm gonna go back to get more info but they do know their stuff.
Kale's in Hawaii Kai. These people are true to the lifestyle, they know vegan vegetarian and raw. They got raw almonds, oats, honey's, agave nectar's and all kinds of stuff. I highly recommend them because of their great knowledge in this area.
Last but not least. Down to Earth. Probably the first health food store in the islands if not, then the most popular. People who work there are vegans or vegetarians so they know their stuff. I haven't been there in a while but I will pay a visit and drop some great knowledge and info for you. I'll also add some pictures and keep everyone updated with my finds. If anyone has some underground, hole in the wall store drop me a line and I'll post it up. Have a good night, please sign up as a follower, execise, eat well and stop animal cruelty! Later!

Rawfood

What is Rawfoods? Anything, well not anything, that is not heated above 115 degrees F. Foods that are heated above that will lose any kind of nutrients that the food may hold. For example eating a raw piece of broccoli will give a whole lot more if not all nutrients than a steamed or fried piece. You might as well drink a glass of water. Instant oatmeal, it has been rolled, cut and pre cooked somehow. So whats really good about it anyway? Nothing really. When instant oatmeal is processed, the nutrient contents change. The end product may contain more sugar than what is needed in you body and your diet. Sugar  is already  broken down to its simplist form will go straight to storage in your body. Raw Oatmeal(Groats, looks like rice) on the other hand doesn't contain the sugar and has all nutrients intact. Less carbs and sugar, plenty of fiber equals fresh, "Raw" oatmeal. This also makes it easier on the body to digest.
Remember the label has to say 'Raw" and make sure its "Organic". Vegetables, nuts and fruits must be organic. It's safer, it doesn't contain pesticides and chemicals like regular fruits and veggies. Whatever is sprayed on the plants or put in the soil goes in the plants, in your mouth and in your body. Thats Sick! "SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL ORGANIC GROWERS". If you see anything that is misleading or wrong let me know I'll go back to the books and fix it.

The launch of "Rawfood Fitness"

Welcome to my journey to a "Rawfood Lifestyle".  I'll be talking to you about exercising, eating right and fitness. Be patient and don't hold me to anything until I quote a credible author or article. I'm not a Doctor or Professional trainer, but I've had years of training in the gym and tried fad diets like crazy. I know what has failed and why and what might work if done properly. I still train and eat well everyday and I never have been in better shape than now. Like anything else you do you should see your doctor and see if your in good health to try these recipes and exercises. I'm still in the early stages of learning and experimenting with different types of rawfoods and styles of preparation, so bare with me.
